‘Trust God and do the next thing’

Just Do Something Kevin de YoungJust Do Something
by Kevin de Young

In this hugely readable and easily digested short book (only 122 pages!), Kevin de Young delivers exactly what is written on the tin – a liberating approach to finding God’s will.  And liberating it is. Disarmingly, the Foreward begins with the assertion that ‘it is God’s will for you to read this book’.  Don’t you get all excited when a book says that? Well don’t get excited for long because, as de Young points out, this view of God’s will is ‘total baloney’.  That got my attention even before chapter 1 and it was sustained throughout as the author navigated the choppy waters of knowing what God wants us to do with our lives.

Beginning with a comforting assertion of God’s total involvement in every detail of our lives he proceeds to call us to a mature dependence that stops fearing that we’ll ‘take the wrong job, or buy the wrong house, or declare the wrong major (rather American, but hey), or marry the wrong person’ and start making decisions without putting ourselves through the misery of agonising over and over-spiritualizing each one. ‘Live for God’ he says, ‘obey the scriptures…be holy, love Jesus and as you do these things, do whatever else you like, with whomever you like, wherever you like and you’ll be walking in the will of God.’

As a person who can fret unduly over decisions, I found this book emboldened me to lay aside the mistaken expectation that God will guide me on issues He’s not promised to and to take the next step with less nervousness.  Even to take that step with a spring in it!  May it do the same for you.
